Nov 23, 2021

Joseph G. Jemsek, M.D., FACP, AAHIVS, received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois and then went on to complete his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He then completed his fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Baylor University in Houston, Texas. He is currently located at Jemsek Specialty Clinic, 2440 M Street NW, Suite 205, in Washington, D.C.

He started his career in Charlotte, NC as an internist and infectious disease consultant and diagnosed the first NC case of what would later become known as HIV/AIDS in early 1982. Over the next 23 years, he was recognized as a provider for the largest HIV/AIDS population on the East Coast between New York and Miami.

In 1998, Dr. Jemsek was awarded the North Carolina Certificate of Appreciation Award by NC Governor James Hunt for his work on HIV/AIDS. This is the state of NC's highest civilian award and is given out on an "as merited" basis. Noted for his philanthropic work, in 2003 he created the Jemsek CHARM project, a charitable organization devoted to the care of the HIV/AIDS community.

As a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and infectious disease, Dr. Jemsek has the distinction of having been heavily involved in the pre-COVID twin epidemics of modern times, HIV/AIDS and the Lyme Borreliosis Complex (LBC). For several years while in the Charlotte area, Dr. Jemsek carried twin specialties in HIV/AIDS and LBC until he converted entirely to following patients suffering with LBC.

In early 2010, he relocated his practice to Washington, D.C. In his capacity as a recognized authority on the evolving specialty of tick-borne illness, Dr. Jemsek now sees patients from every state and well over a dozen countries, an estimated total of over 14,000 patients thus far. He has given numerous lectures and is widely followed and quoted on LBC for his opinions. His passion is to continue caring for marginalized populations and to generate a comprehensive list of academic publications so that one day the study of LBC and Tick-Borne illnesses will not only enter the mainstream of Medicine but also become recognized as its own discipline in the field of medicine.
